This is the mother load of all the detoxes. This post is going to get VERY personal…. I am talking some major TMI moments so I am sorry for that in advance. I do feel like everything I am about to share with you does need to be said because I wish I had known what I know now before I started.
Here’s how it works, you have to ease in to this very demanding cleanse by eating zero processed foods or meats for three days. During this time I would also recommend cutting out any gluten or added sugars because the withdrawal will be difficult especially if you rely on intaking breads with every meal or adding sugars to your drinks. Keep in mind most pre-made meals (even sauces) already have a TON of added sugar so you will be better off cooking your meals from scratch so you know exactly what is going into your body. I stuck with freshly made juices.
Now you are ready for the 10-day lemonade diet. This was by far the craziest and hardest cleanse I have had to do. Honestly, I pretty much had terrible timing because on Day-4 I attended a wedding and all I wanted to do was munch on something, drink a coffee and obviously indulge in the cake.
Plan ahead and make sure that you will not be surrounded by events that will potentially tempt you because I am telling you this is no joke, you will be hungry. It was hardest getting to Day-5, after that dare I say it got easier. Once the 10-day lemonade diet is over you HAVE to slowly ease your body into eating again. Yup, you guessed it! It is back to broths, juices and foods that can be easily processed like salad and raw veggies.
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!! I had a friend tell me that the first time he did this cleanse he tried to go back to eating full hearty meals immediately and it really messed with his stomach and even caused serious headaches. The way I thought about it was I had just put my body through a very intense routine that completely cleaned me out so why in the world would I want to put junk back in or expect that I could eat the same amount of food as before.
Lemonade Recipe (one day)
Prepare the night before. The last thing you want to do is be temped to have breakfast and have to restart the entire detox again tomorrow.
- 60 oz of filtered water
- 12 tablespoons of organic grade B maple syrup
- 12 tablespoons of organic lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder
Salt Water Flush Recipe (drink full serving every morning)
1 quart of purified warm water
2 teaspoons of sea salt
- After you wake up drink the saltwater flush.
- Drink your detox lemonade throughout the day. *It is recommended that you should not begin drinking your lemonade until after you have passed a morning bowel movement.
- About an hour or two before bed drink a detox tea (no added sugar).
What I Hated
Typically the side effects are supposed to be bowel movements that look almost like tar. This is your body unclogging your organs and shredding fat. In my case I already lead a healthy lifestyle (juice daily and eat mostly a vegetarian diet) so my bathroom situation was very different. I can’t believe I am even going to say this because it is pretty embarrassing but the moment I would go to the bathroom water would come out and not from where it should. It wasn’t diarrhea and the reason I say that is because it was clear. Sometimes it was such an instant urge that I would have to stay in the bathroom for a good 30-45 minutes.
I consulted a nutritionist who ended up giving me some insight that I will gladly share with you. Basically since I eat organic, haven’t eaten processed foods in years and didn’t have much weight to lose in the first place my body was forced to release all that it had which was only the salt water flush, lemonade, and the detox tea I was ingesting. It was embarrassing and way more inconvenient that any other cleanse I have ever been on because it wasn’t a bowel movement and it was uncontrollable.<
What I LOVED/ the Results
HELLO, I LOST WEIGHT (9.4 pounds to be exact)!! I stopped after the 8th day because I had reached my desired weight loss and now am ready for some major toning. I lost weight in my face and my arms which was good enough for me. I am realistic when it comes to diets and cleanses; there is no quick fix to a healthy and fit lifestyle. It is a journey and it is something that I have to work at everyday. Even when I get to the place I want to be, it will be about maintaining that look.
Would I Do The Master Cleanse Again?
Honestly, no. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who already eats organic or doesn’t have a significant amount of weight to lose (15+ pounds). Of course my symptoms were rare and a bunch of other people who do this cleanse love it. If you are looking for a great detox my ultimate favorite is the Jillian Michaels 7-day detox. Not only does it work but in my opinion it’s way healthier.
To find out more about the Master Cleanse I recommend talking to your doctor and reviewing their website. It really is mind over matter when you are fasting. I took to Twitter and reached out to others who had already been through the cleanse experience which was necessary to hear such encouraging words. So to all of you about to rock it out, I wish you all the best of luck and as always I am only a tweet away if you have a question or just need a little encouragement to keep you going through those tough moments.
